With two out of three wins in the weekend, veteran Michael Shepherd took out the 1st Weldwell Formula First championship round of 2010 - New Year's Thunder at Taupo Motorsport Park. After the returning Formula Ford and Speedway sensation Nick Cassidy dominated the first race, Shepherd made some adjustments for the remaining races, and left the rest of the field to battle for the minors. What a battle it was, with the "young guns" showing the crowd that New Zealand Motorsport is in good hands, as Speed Sport Scholarship winner Aaron Hodgson, the Aforementioned Nick Cassidy, Bramwell King and Jamie Gaskin constantly ran within centimeters of each other right to the end of every race.
After three rounds though, its Shepherd out infront in the point chase, with Hodgson just behind and Andrew Vincent a little further back, after a few niggling issues during the weekend.
