After sixty minutes and 40 laps around the Manfeild Park circuit, it was the Dodson’s Autospares machine of Andrew Vincent who took out an entertaining final (non-championship) race of the 2009/10 Weldwell Formula First season.
With a race that included a few new faces, it was the drivers who finished second and third in the championship who dominated the event. 09/10 Speedsport scholarship winner Aaron Hodgson looked to have it in the bag for a while, until a pitlane infringement caused the Aucklander to have a drive-through penalty, which brought Vincent back into the picture.
As the event experienced a spike in temperature, not only from the close action at the front, but also thanks to the Yellow KRD machine of Dave Scammell which experienced a small fire moments after a pit stop, the race was practically turned into a sprint race to the end.
Vincent allowed the Speedsport machine to take the lead until the final corner of the last lap, where he passed Hodgson and held on to take the 2009/10 Formula First One Hour victory by 0.004 seconds – with first-time driver Richard Andrews in third overall.
With that, the 2009/10 Weldwell New Zealand Formula First season came to an end, but only for a short time, as the preparation of the 2010/11 season has begun - with the ‘winter series’ events held once a month over the…winter.
